Kula Fields | Produce Delivery July 31 – Aug. 3, 2013 | What’s In The Box?

Kula Fields Boxes 07-31-13

It has been an interesting start to this week.  Preparations for tropical storm warnings prompted us to shift our delivery day to Lanai.  We wanted to make sure folks over there got fresh goodies before the ferry shut down… and it did shut down so we ordered, picked up, packed and got boxes out for them on Sunday.  We also started calling farmers to see what needed to be harvested before it was either ruined by the rain or in danger from the wind and mud. Today Flossie has come and gone and the area has been blessed by rains and winds are calm.  We resumed calls to farmers and for the most part…things are in good shape or will recover soon.  Music to our ears!

We have a great mix of staples this week.  Carrots, corn, pineapple and pickling cucumbers will be in boxes this week.  Don’t know how to make pickles?  I found a super simple recipe on pinterest that you can check out.  I make some very similar only I omit the agave nectar.  I also like to experiment with the spices.  My favorite so far is curry.  BE BOLD.  BE BRAVE. Make some refrigerator pickles!

Kula Fields | Produce Delivery July 24-27, 2013 | What’s In The Box?

This week’s boxes are all about refreshment, rehydration, and most of the items can be eaten raw.  It’s been pretty warm around these parts lately and I’ve been inspired to make naturally flavored waters by infusing them with goods from the boxes.  Mint, Cucumber,  & watermelon infused waters are just what my body has been craving.  Naturally infused waters are mood elevators, appetite suppressants, and give you a natural burst of energy.

Cabbage, shredded beets, sprouts are all begging to be salad or incorporated into a delicious wrap of some kind.  Long beans and eggplant told me they were stir fry.  I love it when my food talks to me : )  Hope your week is full of inspiration and refreshment!

There is just nothing like eating a satisfying hearty meal.  Roasted beets and fennel mixed with sauteed greens and  served with fresh eggs and fresh cut fruit  is how every morning should start.  My meal left me inspired for this week’s 3rd Annual Pie Tweetup on Saturday at the Maui Tropical Plantation from 10am-1pm,  celebrating our five year anniversary.  I”m not really too big on sweets.  I like them, don’t get me wrong.  I just like them in moderation. Savory pies…for me, that’s where it’s at.  With veggies from this week’s boxes…I can’t wait to see what I whip up.  Hope to see you there!

We love summer. We fire up our grill on a regular basis and dine outside while watching the sunset. We hope you’ll fire up your grill this week and enjoy the contents of your box. This week’s box is a collaboration of produce from several islands. We have butternut squash from Oahu and carrots from Big Island. Organic pineapple in their peak from West Maui. Onions, zucchini, carrots, pineapple, eggplant & tomatoes lightly oiled, salted, and marinated with fresh herbs are made for the grill or use your herbs for an evening cocktail and watch the sunset. Do you know what happens when your asparagus guy calls and says, “Roxanne, I’m going to have plenty of asparagus the next couple weeks and I can supply you if you’d like them for your boxes.”?  That’s right, you take ’em… regardless if it puts you over budget.  Same story with gorgeous, delicious, crimini mushrooms…you take ’em.  The result are boxes that have the fixin’s for ono meals.  We sauteed mushrooms and grilled asparagus for dinner last night.  Thank goodness there are leftovers! MMM..MMM…GOOD!

Maui customers will get asparagus this week and Oahu folks will get them next week.  Mushrooms for everyone this week!  A fortunate route on Oahu will get some of those sweet and juicy Maui apples I managed to score a few weeks ago. Seriously good eats this week!

I love being able to get my hands on the various fruits of summer.  Loving the sapote, lychee, mango, and I don’t know about you, but I enjoy sampling all of the different kinds a pineapple that we’ve ben having in the boxes lately.  I’m not sure that I have a favorite yet.  The strawberries just are not very promising right now.  One of the farmers I work with lost four acres of strawberries due to recent rains and it will take a bit to get back up to full production. Cross your fingers for summer sunshine!  The first day of summer is Friday!

Kula Fields Boxes 6-12-13

I was completely knocked off guard this past week.  It was my first Saturday in quite sometime where I didn’t have an event to rush off to or some other work related place to go.  I decided to do some computer work, redesign my rack cards, and just kick back with the kids for the day when the phone rang.  On the other end was a backyard grower telling me he had gotten my name and number from another backyard grower.  The gentleman proceeds to tell me he has locally grown apples that are juicy and  sweet, as well as peaches that rival those on grocery store shelves.  I admit, I was quite a bit skeptical, having tried both local apples and peaches and never really savoring the flavors of either.

I agreed to meet him a little after lunch and find out more.  I packed up the kids and off we went.  What we came back with was a whole new eye opener.  Small, deliciously tasty apples in a small amount and five unbelievably delightful sample peaches that rival those from Georgia, let alone the grocery store.  His apple season and supply is just getting started and there are more to come.  It will come in waves so not all areas will get them each week.  I will do my best to distribute equally.  The peaches will be a lot less because his trees are only three years old and  I am unsure who will be the lucky recipients of those goodies.  The day was an educational flavor journey for my family.  Who knew that this could be done here and done well?  Hope you enjoy.

Also on tap are strawberries and  the last of the leeks for a bit on Oahu and creamy white sapote and shredded cabbage for your summer salads on Maui.

Kula Fields Box June 5-8, 2013

Oh, Happy Day!  Dreams of butternut squash and brown butter sage sauce are dancing in my head.  For good measure, add some leeks!  Real treats are in store this week. The butternut squash may not be pretty on the outside but you’re not going to eat the outside, right?  On Maui, some folks will be getting garlic. Not many people grow garlic so it’s a real treat.  On Oahu, you folks will be getting White Sapote.  It can be yellowish green when ripe and will be soft to the touch.  The creamy, custard like filling is a delicious delicacy.

Mushrooms are back on the menu this week!  Organically grown and certified, these babies are a real treat.  Midweek newspaper on Oahu recently highlighted the farm and tells a great story.  In case you missed it, you can read it here.  Yang’s growing model is one I really love and is perfect model for sustainability.

There has also been a slight change in the delivery schedule for this week.  We sent emails out to folks who would be affected but in case you overlooked it…All deliveries that would normally be on Saturday this week have been moved to Friday.  This is a temporary shift due to being short a driver.  Don’t worry…they are fine.  They are just visiting family elsewhere.  Things will resume to normal next week.
